Checking Signal Strength
The BEC performs best when it has strong connection to a nearby cell tower. The Received Signal Strength and the Signal Quality are two indicators of the quality of the connection to the tower. Good signal strength is typically better than -100, e.g. -90 or -95. Good signal quality is a more positive number, like +5 or 0 and indicates the amount of distortion or noise in the received signal. If you have a poor signal strength (like -104 or -110), you typically have worse transmission speeds. But you can have good signal strength (like -90) and poor signal quality (like -14) and you still have poor speeds because the received signal, although strong, is noisy. So it is harder for the modem to pull the data signal out of the received signal.
Do the following to find the best of both:
Use the long thin ethernet cable the BEC comes with to move it around different locations of the house. If you have the panel cover screwed onto it the BEC can also be mounted outside and/or high up to maximize signal strength. Even just turning the device around abour 20-30 degrees at a time can greatly increase the signal strength.
Using a phone or pc connected to the router's wifi signal open a browser like google and type 10.0.01 in the address bar and hit enter. This should take you to a login page that says BEC by Billion
Enter root for the username and HelloWorld$ for the password and log in.
When the Overview page loads, Click Modem > 5g NR Status.
Slowly walk around your home holding your BEC router and watching the signal strength screen. You'll see the green bars, the Signal Strength and Signal Quality numbers change as you move around. After finding a new spot click the refresh button at the bottom of the page and see if the signal is better or worse. You want both to be as positive a number as you can get; e.g. a Signal Strength of -90 is better than -100 and a Signal Quality of -7 is better than -17.
Keep the router near the outside walls of your home as you walk around. You'll probably find the signal strongest when it is near a window. The signal is also typically strongest the higher you are above ground. Basements typically do not get great signal.
Once find the location with the strongest signal, leave the BEC there.
If you don't find a strong enough signal, or the BEC isn't connecting well to the tower, please repeat the above procedure but do it outside, walking around the exterior of your home. If you get a better signal strength outside of your home, then it may be worth mounting the BEC outside.
Confirm Settings are correct
If you have a router without a physical SIM (also referred to as a vSIM please skip this step as it would automatically pull the correct APN from the vSIM)
- On a device connected to the BEC's wifi signal open a browser and search for 10.0.0.1
- Login using the username root and password HelloWorld$
- Go to Modem > Connection Profile
- Make sure SIM is set to Physical (ONLY if you have a physical SIM, you can check by looking to see if there is one inserted in the slot by the power/ethernet cable or call Unlimitedville Tech Support to confirm)
- Click 'Save & Apply' At the bottom of the page
- Go to Modem > Cellular TTL or LTE TTL
- Click the box to enable and Save those settings as well
- Reboot the device by going to System > Reboot and select Perform Reboot
Factory Reset
- Press the recessed/pinhole button on the back of the BEC next to the power cord (using a pen or small object) and hold it for a full 10-15 seconds.
- Release the button. The boot-up takes just under 3 minutes and you should see all the lights come back on and should either be green or orange.
- After the WIFI LED comes back on, you can log into the router and configure things if needed.
- After this kind of reset you will need to go back and check the settings are correct as shown in the steps above.
